It's common for many investors, especially those who are inexperienced, to buy shares in companies with a good story even if these companies are loss-making. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' A loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the inflow of external capital may dry up.

So if this idea of high risk and high reward doesn't suit, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Avantor (NYSE:AVTR). While profit isn't the sole metric that should be considered when investing, it's worth recognising businesses that can consistently produce it.

Avantor's Improving Profits

Over the last three years, Avantor has grown earnings per share (EPS) at as impressive rate from a relatively low point, resulting in a three year percentage growth rate that isn't particularly indicative of expected future performance. So it would be better to isolate the growth rate over the last year for our analysis. In impressive fashion, Avantor's EPS grew from US$0.46 to US$0.85, over the previous 12 months. It's a rarity to see 85% year-on-year growth like that.

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. EBIT margins for Avantor remained fairly unchanged over the last year, however the company should be pleased to report its revenue growth for the period of 8.0% to US$7.6b. That's a real positive.

Are Avantor Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Owing to the size of Avantor, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a significant proportion of the company. But we are reassured by the fact they have invested in the company. Holding US$62m worth of stock in the company is no laughing matter and insiders will be committed in delivering the best outcomes for shareholders. This would indicate that the goals of shareholders and management are one and the same.

Should You Add Avantor To Your Watchlist?

Based on the sum of its parts, we definitely think its worth watching Avantor very closely.
