Thanks in no small measure to Vanguard founder Jack Bogle, it's easy buy a low cost index fund, which should provide the average market return. But you can make better returns by buying undervalued shares. To wit, Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ:REGN) shares are up 48% in three years, besting the market return. The stock price is up 2.3%: that's not amazing, but it's better than a kick in the teeth.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Regeneron Pharmaceuticals was able to grow its EPS at 43% per year over three years, sending the share price higher. The average annual share price increase of 14% is actually lower than the EPS growth. So one could reasonably conclude that the market has cooled on the stock.

You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

A Different Perspective

Regeneron Pharmaceuticals provided a TSR of 2.3% over the last twelve months. But that was short of the market average. On the bright side, the longer term returns (running at about 6% a year, over half a decade) look better. It may well be that this is a business worth popping on the watching, given the continuing positive reception, over time, from the market.
