The Market Doesn't Like What It Sees From Moderna, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:MRNA) Revenues Yet As Shares Tumble 28%

Unfortunately for some shareholders, the Moderna, Inc. (NASDAQ:MRNA) share price has dived 28% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 44% share price drop.

After such a large drop in price, Moderna's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 4.3x might make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the wider Biotechs industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 11.5x and even P/S above 67x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

How Moderna Has Been Performing

Moderna hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. It seems that many are expecting the poor revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the P/S ratio. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value.

Keen to find out how analysts think Moderna's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

Moderna's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling revenue, and importantly, perform much worse than the industry.

Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 53%. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 28% overall. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 0.2% per annum during the coming three years according to the analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 146% per year, which is noticeably more attractive.

In light of this, it's understandable that Moderna's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

What Does Moderna's P/S Mean For Investors?

Moderna's P/S looks about as weak as its stock price lately. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

As we suspected, our examination of Moderna's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior revenue outlook is contributing to its low P/S. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
