ContraFect (NASDAQ:CFRX) Is In A Good Position To Deliver On Growth Plans
We can readily understand why investors are attracted to unprofitable companies. For example, although Amazon.com made losses for many years after listing, if you had bought and held the shares since 1999, you would have made a fortune. But while the successes are well known, investors should not ignore the very many unprofitable companies that simply burn through all their cash and collapse.
So, the natural question for ContraFect (NASDAQ:CFRX) shareholders is whether they should be concerned by its rate of cash burn. In this article, we define cash burn as its annual (negative) free cash flow, which is the amount of money a company spends each year to fund its growth. We'll start by comparing its cash burn with its cash reserves in order to calculate its cash runway.

When Might ContraFect Run Out Of Money?
A company's cash runway is calculated by dividing its cash hoard by its cash burn. When ContraFect last reported its balance sheet in March 2022, it had zero debt and cash worth US$42m. In the last year, its cash burn was US$44m. That means it had a cash runway of around 12 months as of March 2022. Importantly, analysts think that ContraFect will reach cashflow breakeven in around 15 months. So there's a very good chance it won't need more cash, when you consider the burn rate will be reducing in that period. You can see how its cash balance has changed over time in the image below.
How Is ContraFect's Cash Burn Changing Over Time?
ContraFect didn't record any revenue over the last year, indicating that it's an early stage company still developing its business. Nonetheless, we can still examine its cash burn trajectory as part of our assessment of its cash burn situation. With the cash burn rate up 26% in the last year, it seems that the company is ratcheting up investment in the business over time. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but investors should be mindful of the fact that will shorten the cash runway. While the past is always worth studying, it is the future that matters most of all. So you might want to take a peek at how much the company is expected to grow in the next few years.
How Hard Would It Be For ContraFect To Raise More Cash For Growth?
Since its cash burn is moving in the wrong direction, ContraFect shareholders may wish to think ahead to when the company may need to raise more cash. Companies can raise capital through either debt or equity. One of the main advantages held by publicly listed companies is that they can sell shares to investors to raise cash and fund growth. We can compare a company's cash burn to its market capitalisation to get a sense for how many new shares a company would have to issue to fund one year's operations.
ContraFect's cash burn of US$44m is about 40% of its US$110m market capitalisation. That's fairly notable cash burn, so if the company had to sell shares to cover the cost of another year's operations, shareholders would suffer some costly dilution.
How Risky Is ContraFect's Cash Burn Situation?
We must admit that we don't think ContraFect is in a very strong position, when it comes to its cash burn. While its cash runway wasn't too bad, its cash burn relative to its market cap does leave us rather nervous. It's clearly very positive to see that analysts are forecasting the company will break even fairly soon. While we're the kind of investors who are always a bit concerned about the risks involved with cash burning companies, the metrics we have discussed in this article leave us relatively comfortable about ContraFect's situation. On another note, we conducted an in-depth investigation of the company, and identified 3 warning signs for ContraFect (2 make us uncomfortable!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
