Codexis, Inc. (NASDAQ:CDXS) Stocks Pounded By 27% But Not Lagging Industry On Growth Or Pricing
Unfortunately for some shareholders, the Codexis, Inc. (NASDAQ:CDXS) share price has dived 27% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 16% share price drop.
Even after such a large drop in price, given close to half the companies operating in the United States' Life Sciences industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 2.7x, you may still consider Codexis as a stock to potentially avoid with its 4.1x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

How Codexis Has Been Performing
Codexis hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. It might be that many expect the dour revenue performance to recover substantially, which has kept the P/S from collapsing. If not, then existing shareholders may be extremely nervous about the viability of the share price.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Codexis would need to produce impressive growth in excess of the industry.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 15%. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 43% overall. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 23% per annum as estimated by the seven analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 6.5% each year growth forecast for the broader industry.
With this in mind, it's not hard to understand why Codexis' P/S is high relative to its industry peers. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.
The Bottom Line On Codexis' P/S
Codexis' P/S remain high even after its stock plunged. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
We've established that Codexis maintains its high P/S on the strength of its forecasted revenue growth being higher than the the rest of the Life Sciences industry, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in revenues is quite remote, justifying the elevated P/S ratio. Unless the analysts have really missed the mark, these strong revenue forecasts should keep the share price buoyant.
