Pinning Down Magnite, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:MGNI) P/S Is Difficult Right Now
When you see that almost half of the companies in the Media industry in the United States have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 1x, Magnite, Inc. (NASDAQ:MGNI) looks to be giving off some sell signals with its 2x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

How Has Magnite Performed Recently?
Magnite certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing revenue more than most other companies. The P/S is probably high because investors think this strong revenue performance will continue. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Magnite's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver solid growth, and importantly, perform better than the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 8.0% gain to the company's revenues. This was backed up an excellent period prior to see revenue up by 223% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 5.3% per annum during the coming three years according to the nine analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 3.9% each year, which is not materially different.
With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that Magnite's P/S is higher than its industry peers. Apparently many investors in the company are more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. These shareholders may be setting themselves up for disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.
The Bottom Line On Magnite's P/S
We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
Given Magnite's future revenue forecasts are in line with the wider industry, the fact that it trades at an elevated P/S is somewhat surprising. The fact that the revenue figures aren't setting the world alight has us doubtful that the company's elevated P/S can be sustainable for the long term. Unless the company can jump ahead of the rest of the industry in the short-term, it'll be a challenge to maintain the share price at current levels.
We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 1 warning sign for Magnite that you need to be mindful of.
