Cardlytics, Inc. (NASDAQ:CDLX) Soars 30% But It's A Story Of Risk Vs Reward

Cardlytics, Inc. (NASDAQ:CDLX) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 30% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Still, the 30-day jump doesn't change the fact that longer term shareholders have seen their stock decimated by the 80% share price drop in the last twelve months.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, Cardlytics' price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.4x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the Media industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 0.9x and even P/S above 4x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

What Does Cardlytics' P/S Mean For Shareholders?

Cardlytics hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this poor revenue performance isn't going to get any better. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

How Is Cardlytics' Revenue Growth Trending?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as Cardlytics' is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 13% decrease to the company's top line. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk revenue by 3.3% in aggregate. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the six analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 0.7% over the next year. With the industry predicted to deliver 1.0% growth , the company is positioned for a comparable revenue result.

With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that Cardlytics' P/S is lagging behind its industry peers. It may be that most investors are not convinced the company can achieve future growth expectations.

The Final Word

Cardlytics' stock price has surged recently, but its but its P/S still remains modest. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

We've seen that Cardlytics currently trades on a lower than expected P/S since its forecast growth is in line with the wider industry. Despite average revenue growth estimates, there could be some unobserved threats keeping the P/S low. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued, but investors seem to think future revenue could see some volatility.

You always need to take note of risks, for example - Cardlytics has 3 warning signs we think you should be aware of.
