Is Bilibili (NASDAQ:BILI) A Risky Investment?
Warren Buffett famously said, 'Volatility is far from synonymous with risk.' So it seems the smart money knows that debt - which is usually involved in bankruptcies - is a very important factor, when you assess how risky a company is. As with many other companies Bilibili Inc. (NASDAQ:BILI) makes use of debt. But the real question is whether this debt is making the company risky.
What Risk Does Debt Bring?
Debt assists a business until the business has trouble paying it off, either with new capital or with free cash flow. Part and parcel of capitalism is the process of 'creative destruction' where failed businesses are mercilessly liquidated by their bankers. However, a more common (but still painful) scenario is that it has to raise new equity capital at a low price, thus permanently diluting shareholders. Of course, the upside of debt is that it often represents cheap capital, especially when it replaces dilution in a company with the ability to reinvest at high rates of return. The first thing to do when considering how much debt a business uses is to look at its cash and debt together.

What Is Bilibili's Net Debt?
The image below, which you can click on for greater detail, shows that Bilibili had debt of CN¥4.84b at the end of December 2024, a reduction from CN¥7.46b over a year. However, its balance sheet shows it holds CN¥16.5b in cash, so it actually has CN¥11.7b net cash.
A Look At Bilibili's Liabilities
Zooming in on the latest balance sheet data, we can see that Bilibili had liabilities of CN¥14.8b due within 12 months and liabilities of CN¥3.83b due beyond that. Offsetting these obligations, it had cash of CN¥16.5b as well as receivables valued at CN¥1.23b due within 12 months. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by CN¥823.3m.
This state of affairs indicates that Bilibili's balance sheet looks quite solid, as its total liabilities are just about equal to its liquid assets. So while it's hard to imagine that the CN¥63.1b company is struggling for cash, we still think it's worth monitoring its balance sheet. Despite its noteworthy liabilities, Bilibili boasts net cash, so it's fair to say it does not have a heavy debt load! The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. But it is future earnings, more than anything, that will determine Bilibili's ability to maintain a healthy balance sheet going forward. So if you're focused on the future you can check out this free report showing analyst profit forecasts.
Over 12 months, Bilibili reported revenue of CN¥27b, which is a gain of 19%, although it did not report any earnings before interest and tax. We usually like to see faster growth from unprofitable companies, but each to their own.
So How Risky Is Bilibili?
Although Bilibili had an earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) loss over the last twelve months, it generated positive free cash flow of CN¥2.0b. So although it is loss-making, it doesn't seem to have too much near-term balance sheet risk, keeping in mind the net cash. Until we see some positive EBIT, we're a bit cautious of the stock, not least because of the rather modest revenue growth. When I consider a company to be a bit risky, I think it is responsible to check out whether insiders have been reporting any share sales.
