Materion Insiders Sold US$3.3m Of Shares Suggesting Hesitancy
Many Materion Corporation (NYSE:MTRN) insiders ditched their stock over the past year, which may be of interest to the company's shareholders. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.
Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Materion
The CEO, President & Director, Jugal Vijayvargiya, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$2.2m worth of shares at a price of US$113 each. We generally don't like to see insider selling, but the lower the sale price, the more it concerns us. The good news is that this large sale was at well above current price of US$87.74. So it may not shed much light on insider confidence at current levels.

Insider Ownership
For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. It appears that Materion insiders own 1.4% of the company, worth about US$25m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
