It's common for many investors, especially those who are inexperienced, to buy shares in companies with a good story even if these companies are loss-making. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' A loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the inflow of external capital may dry up.

If this kind of company isn't your style, you like companies that generate revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Mosaic (NYSE:MOS). While profit isn't the sole metric that should be considered when investing, it's worth recognising businesses that can consistently produce it.

Mosaic's Improving Profits

Mosaic has undergone a massive growth in earnings per share over the last three years. So much so that this three year growth rate wouldn't be a fair assessment of the company's future. So it would be better to isolate the growth rate over the last year for our analysis. It's good to see that Mosaic's EPS has grown from US$7.09 to US$8.54 over twelve months. This amounts to a 20% gain; a figure that shareholders will be pleased to see. It also seems the company is in good financial health, since it has boosted EPS by buying back shares.

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. On the revenue front, Mosaic has done well over the past year, growing revenue by 35% to US$19b but EBIT margin figures were less stellar, seeing a decline over the last 12 months. If EBIT margins are able to stay balanced and this revenue growth continues, then we should see brighter days ahead.

Are Mosaic Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Since Mosaic has a market capitalisation of US$12b, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a large percentage of shares. But thanks to their investment in the company, it's pleasing to see that there are still incentives to align their actions with the shareholders. Given insiders own a significant chunk of shares, currently valued at US$70m, they have plenty of motivation to push the business to succeed. That's certainly enough to let shareholders know that management will be very focussed on long term growth.

Is Mosaic Worth Keeping An Eye On?

One important encouraging feature of Mosaic is that it is growing profits. For those who are looking for a little more than this, the high level of insider ownership enhances our enthusiasm for this growth. The combination definitely favoured by investors so consider keeping the company on a watchlist. Before you take the next step you should know about the 2 warning signs for Mosaic (1 is a bit concerning!) that we have uncovered.

Although Mosaic certainly looks good, it may appeal to more investors if insiders were buying up shares. If you like to see insider buying, then this free list of growing companies that insiders are buying, could be exactly what you're looking for.
