An Insider At Carpenter Technology Lowered Their Holding Recently
Insiders were net sellers of Carpenter Technology Corporation's (NYSE:CRS ) stock during the past year. That is, insiders sold more stock than they bought.
Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.
Carpenter Technology Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Independent Director, Steven Karol, for US$3.1m worth of shares, at about US$101 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of US$168. As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. This single sale was just 6.8% of Steven Karol's stake. Steven Karol was the only individual insider to sell over the last year.
Steven Karol ditched 46.00k shares over the year. The average price per share was US$127. You can see a visual depiction of insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last 12 months, below. Does Carpenter Technology Boast High Insider Ownership?
Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Carpenter Technology insiders own 2.4% of the company, currently worth about US$207m based on the recent share price. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
What Might The Insider Transactions At Carpenter Technology Tell Us?

It's great to see high levels of insider ownership, but looking back over the last year, we don't gain confidence from the Carpenter Technology insiders selling. So these insider transactions can help us build a thesis about the stock, but it's also worthwhile knowing the risks facing this company.
