It's been a good week for Crown Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:CCK) shareholders, because the company has just released its latest quarterly results, and the shares gained 9.1% to US$84.90. Crown Holdings reported US$3.0b in revenue, roughly in line with analyst forecasts, although statutory earnings per share (EPS) of US$1.45 beat expectations, being 5.8% higher than what the analysts expected. Earnings are an important time for investors, as they can track a company's performance, look at what the analysts are forecasting for next year, and see if there's been a change in sentiment towards the company. With this in mind, we've gathered the latest statutory forecasts to see what the analysts are expecting for next year.

NYSE:CCK Earnings and Revenue Growth July 26th 2024

Following last week's earnings report, Crown Holdings' 15 analysts are forecasting 2024 revenues to be US$11.8b, approximately in line with the last 12 months. Per-share earnings are expected to soar 34% to US$4.85. Before this earnings report, the analysts had been forecasting revenues of US$11.8b and earnings per share (EPS) of US$4.79 in 2024. The consensus analysts don't seem to have seen anything in these results that would have changed their view on the business, given there's been no major change to their estimates.

With the analysts reconfirming their revenue and earnings forecasts, it's surprising to see that the price target rose 5.2% to US$100. It looks as though they previously had some doubts over whether the business would live up to their expectations. Fixating on a single price target can be unwise though, since the consensus target is effectively the average of analyst price targets. As a result, some investors like to look at the range of estimates to see if there are any diverging opinions on the company's valuation. The most optimistic Crown Holdings analyst has a price target of US$120 per share, while the most pessimistic values it at US$88.00. There are definitely some different views on the stock, but the range of estimates is not wide enough as to imply that the situation is unforecastable, in our view.

Of course, another way to look at these forecasts is to place them into context against the industry itself. It's pretty clear that there is an expectation that Crown Holdings' revenue growth will slow down substantially, with revenues to the end of 2024 expected to display 1.2% growth on an annualised basis. This is compared to a historical growth rate of 3.9% over the past five years. By way of comparison, the other companies in this industry with analyst coverage are forecast to grow their revenue at 7.7% per year. So it's pretty clear that, while revenue growth is expected to slow down, the wider industry is also expected to grow faster than Crown Holdings.

The Bottom Line

The most important thing to take away is that there's been no major change in sentiment, with the analysts reconfirming that the business is performing in line with their previous earnings per share estimates. On the plus side, there were no major changes to revenue estimates; although forecasts imply they will perform worse than the wider industry. There was also a nice increase in the price target, with the analysts clearly feeling that the intrinsic value of the business is improving.

Following on from that line of thought, we think that the long-term prospects of the business are much more relevant than next year's earnings. At Simply Wall St, we have a full range of analyst estimates for Crown Holdings going out to 2026, and you can see them free on our platform here..
