AptarGroup Insiders Sell US$4.3m Of Stock, Possibly Signalling Caution
In the last year, many AptarGroup, Inc. (NYSE:ATR) insiders sold a substantial stake in the company which may have sparked shareholders' attention. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.
Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.
The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At AptarGroup
Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Executive VP of President & Strategic Group Dev. and President of Aptar Asia, Xiangwei Gong, for US$1.1m worth of shares, at about US$147 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of US$151. As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. This single sale was just 35% of Xiangwei Gong's stake.
AptarGroup insiders didn't buy any shares over the last year. You can see a visual depiction of insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last 12 months, below. If you want to know exactly who sold, for how much, and when, simply click on the graph below!

Insider Ownership
Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. It appears that AptarGroup insiders own 0.7% of the company, worth about US$69m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
So What Do The AptarGroup Insider Transactions Indicate?
