Travelers Companies Insiders Sold US$17m Of Shares Suggesting Hesitancy

Over the past year, many The Travelers Companies, Inc. (NYSE:TRV) insiders sold a significant stake in the company which may have piqued investors' interest. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more beneficial than knowing whether they are selling, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Travelers Companies Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Chairman & CEO, Alan Schnitzer, for US$13m worth of shares, at about US$266 per share. That means that an insider was selling shares at around the current price of US$258. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. In this case, the big sale took place at around the current price, so it's not too bad (but it's still not a positive).

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. It's great to see that Travelers Companies insiders own 0.4% of the company, worth about US$247m. This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
