For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it currently lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, so investors in these companies may be taking on more risk than they should.

In contrast to all that, many investors prefer to focus on companies like Goosehead Insurance (NASDAQ:GSHD), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business.

How Quickly Is Goosehead Insurance Increasing Earnings Per Share?

Generally, companies experiencing growth in earnings per share (EPS) should see similar trends in share price. That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. It certainly is nice to see that Goosehead Insurance has managed to grow EPS by 25% per year over three years. So it's not surprising to see the company trades on a very high multiple of (past) earnings.

Are Goosehead Insurance Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

It's said that there's no smoke without fire. For investors, insider buying is often the smoke that indicates which stocks could set the market alight. This view is based on the possibility that stock purchases signal bullishness on behalf of the buyer. Of course, we can never be sure what insiders are thinking, we can only judge their actions.

It's pleasing to note that insiders spent US$1.1m buying Goosehead Insurance shares, over the last year, without reporting any share sales whatsoever. The shareholders within the general public should find themselves expectant and certainly hopeful, that this large outlay signals prescient optimism for the business. It is also worth noting that it was President Mark Miller who made the biggest single purchase, worth US$581k, paying US$58.14 per share.

On top of the insider buying, it's good to see that Goosehead Insurance insiders have a valuable investment in the business. With a whopping US$61m worth of shares as a group, insiders have plenty riding on the company's success. This would indicate that the goals of shareholders and management are one and the same.

Shareholders have more to smile about than just insiders adding more shares to their already sizeable holdings. The cherry on top is that the CEO, Mark Miller is paid comparatively modestly to CEOs at similar sized companies. The median total compensation for CEOs of companies similar in size to Goosehead Insurance, with market caps between US$2.0b and US$6.4b, is around US$6.7m.

The Goosehead Insurance CEO received total compensation of just US$1.9m in the year to December 2023. First impressions seem to indicate a compensation policy that is favourable to shareholders. While the level of CEO compensation shouldn't be the biggest factor in how the company is viewed, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. It can also be a sign of a culture of integrity, in a broader sense.
