Many Glaukos Corporation (NYSE:GKOS) insiders ditched their stock over the past year, which may be of interest to the company's shareholders. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

Glaukos Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the President & COO, Joseph Gilliam, sold US$2.0m worth of shares at a price of US$93.05 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of US$138. As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. We note that the biggest single sale was 56% of Joseph Gilliam's holding.

Does Glaukos Boast High Insider Ownership?

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. It's great to see that Glaukos insiders own 3.2% of the company, worth about US$234m. This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
