Need To Know: NuVasive, Inc. (NASDAQ:NUVA) Insiders Have Been Buying Shares
We've lost count of how many times insiders have accumulated shares in a company that goes on to improve markedly. On the other hand, we'd be remiss not to mention that insider sales have been known to precede tough periods for a business. So before you buy or sell NuVasive, Inc. (NASDAQ:NUVA), you may well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling.
Do Insider Transactions Matter?
Most investors know that it is quite permissible for company leaders, such as directors of the board, to buy and sell stock in the company. However, such insiders must disclose their trading activities, and not trade on inside information.
We would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing. But equally, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether. For example, a Columbia University study found that 'insiders are more likely to engage in open market purchases of their own company’s stock when the firm is about to reveal new agreements with customers and suppliers'.

NuVasive Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when Independent Director Vickie Capps bought US$96k worth of shares at a price of US$48.23 per share. That implies that an insider found the current price of US$58.10 per share to be enticing. While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company's future. We do always like to see insider buying, but it is worth noting if those purchases were made at well below today's share price, as the discount to value may have narrowed with the rising price. Happily, the NuVasive insider decided to buy shares at close to current prices. Vickie Capps was the only individual insider to buy shares in the last twelve months.

Insider Ownership
Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Insiders own 0.7% of NuVasive shares, worth about US$21m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
What Might The Insider Transactions At NuVasive Tell Us?
It doesn't really mean much that no insider has traded NuVasive shares in the last quarter. However, our analysis of transactions over the last year is heartening. Overall we don't see anything to make us think NuVasive insiders are doubting the company, and they do own shares.
