LivaNova (NASDAQ:LIVN) Is Experiencing Growth In Returns On Capital
If you're looking for a multi-bagger, there's a few things to keep an eye out for. Amongst other things, we'll want to see two things; firstly, a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an expansion in the company's amount of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. With that in mind, we've noticed some promising trends at LivaNova (NASDAQ:LIVN) so let's look a bit deeper.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on LivaNova is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.10 = US$183m ÷ (US$2.6b - US$742m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2025).
Thus, LivaNova has an ROCE of 10%. That's a relatively normal return on capital, and it's around the 11% generated by the Medical Equipment industry.

What The Trend Of ROCE Can Tell Us
LivaNova is showing promise given that its ROCE is trending up and to the right. Looking at the data, we can see that even though capital employed in the business has remained relatively flat, the ROCE generated has risen by 356% over the last five years. So it's likely that the business is now reaping the full benefits of its past investments, since the capital employed hasn't changed considerably. It's worth looking deeper into this though because while it's great that the business is more efficient, it might also mean that going forward the areas to invest internally for the organic growth are lacking.
In Conclusion...
As discussed above, LivaNova appears to be getting more proficient at generating returns since capital employed has remained flat but earnings (before interest and tax) are up. And since the stock has fallen 12% over the last five years, there might be an opportunity here. So researching this company further and determining whether or not these trends will continue seems justified.
