EDAP TMS (NASDAQ:EDAP) adds US$10m to market cap in the past 7 days, though investors from three years ago are still down 67%
This week we saw the EDAP TMS S.A. (NASDAQ:EDAP) share price climb by 12%. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last three years have been disappointing. In that time, the share price dropped 67%. Some might say the recent bounce is to be expected after such a bad drop. While many would remain nervous, there could be further gains if the business can put its best foot forward.
Although the past week has been more reassuring for shareholders, they're still in the red over the last three years, so let's see if the underlying business has been responsible for the decline.

EDAP TMS wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.
In the last three years, EDAP TMS saw its revenue grow by 12% per year, compound. That's a pretty good rate of top-line growth. So some shareholders would be frustrated with the compound loss of 19% per year. To be frank we're surprised to see revenue growth and share price growth diverge so strongly. It would be well worth taking a closer look at the company, to determine growth trends (and balance sheet strength).

A Different Perspective
While the broader market gained around 24% in the last year, EDAP TMS shareholders lost 63%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 6% per year over five years. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
