Investors push AtriCure (NASDAQ:ATRC) 3.9% lower this week, company's increasing losses might be to blame
It hasn't been the best quarter for AtriCure, Inc. (NASDAQ:ATRC) shareholders, since the share price has fallen 18% in that time. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last year have been pleasing. In that time we've seen the stock easily surpass the market return, with a gain of 44%.
Although AtriCure has shed US$66m from its market cap this week, let's take a look at its longer term fundamental trends and see if they've driven returns.
AtriCure wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one would hope for good top-line growth to make up for the lack of earnings.
In the last year AtriCure saw its revenue grow by 16%. That's a fairly respectable growth rate. While the share price performed well, gaining 44% over twelve months, you could argue the revenue growth warranted it. If revenue stays on trend, there may be plenty more share price gains to come. But it's crucial to check profitability and cash flow before forming a view on the future.

We consider it positive that insiders have made significant purchases in the last year. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. So we recommend checking out this free report showing consensus forecasts
A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that AtriCure shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 44% over the last year. Notably the five-year annualised TSR loss of 5% per year compares very unfavourably with the recent share price performance. This makes us a little wary, but the business might have turned around its fortunes. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Case in point: We've spotted 1 warning sign for AtriCure you should be aware of.
