It's common for many investors, especially those who are inexperienced, to buy shares in companies with a good story even if these companies are loss-making. Unfortunately, these high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson. A loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the inflow of external capital may dry up.

In contrast to all that, many investors prefer to focus on companies like Simply Good Foods (NASDAQ:SMPL), which has not only revenues, but also profits. While profit isn't the sole metric that should be considered when investing, it's worth recognising businesses that can consistently produce it.

Simply Good Foods' Improving Profits

In the last three years Simply Good Foods' earnings per share took off; so much so that it's a bit disingenuous to use these figures to try and deduce long term estimates. Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. In impressive fashion, Simply Good Foods' EPS grew from US$0.66 to US$1.31, over the previous 12 months. It's a rarity to see 100% year-on-year growth like that.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. On the one hand, Simply Good Foods' EBIT margins fell over the last year, but on the other hand, revenue grew. So if EBIT margins can stabilize, this top-line growth should pay off for shareholders.

Are Simply Good Foods Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Insider interest in a company always sparks a bit of intrigue and many investors are on the lookout for companies where insiders are putting their money where their mouth is. This view is based on the possibility that stock purchases signal bullishness on behalf of the buyer. However, small purchases are not always indicative of conviction, and insiders don't always get it right.

Our analysis into Simply Good Foods has shown that insiders have sold US$104k worth of shares over the last 12 months. But this is outweighed by the trades from President Geoff Tanner who spent US$250k buying shares, at an average price of around US$36.17. So, on balance, that's positive.

Along with the insider buying, another encouraging sign for Simply Good Foods is that insiders, as a group, have a considerable shareholding. Indeed, they have a considerable amount of wealth invested in it, currently valued at US$353m. Holders should find this level of insider commitment quite encouraging, since it would ensure that the leaders of the company would also experience their success, or failure, with the stock.

Shareholders have more to smile about than just insiders adding more shares to their already sizeable holdings. That's because on our analysis the CEO, Joe Scalzo, is paid less than the median for similar sized companies. For companies with market capitalisations between US$2.0b and US$6.4b, like Simply Good Foods, the median CEO pay is around US$6.8m.

Simply Good Foods offered total compensation worth US$4.3m to its CEO in the year to August 2022. That comes in below the average for similar sized companies and seems pretty reasonable. CEO compensation is hardly the most important aspect of a company to consider, but when it's reasonable, that gives a little more confidence that leadership are looking out for shareholder interests. It can also be a sign of good governance, more generally.

Does Simply Good Foods Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

Simply Good Foods' earnings per share have been soaring, with growth rates sky high. The cherry on top is that insiders own a bunch of shares, and one has been buying more. These factors seem to indicate the company's potential and that it has reached an inflection point. We'd suggest Simply Good Foods belongs near the top of your watchlist. Of course, just because Simply Good Foods is growing does not mean it is undervalued.
