We Think Expro Group Holdings (NYSE:XPRO) Can Stay On Top Of Its Debt
David Iben put it well when he said, 'Volatility is not a risk we care about. What we care about is avoiding the permanent loss of capital.' So it might be obvious that you need to consider debt, when you think about how risky any given stock is, because too much debt can sink a company. We note that Expro Group Holdings N.V. (NYSE:XPRO) does have debt on its balance sheet. But is this debt a concern to shareholders?
When Is Debt Dangerous?
Generally speaking, debt only becomes a real problem when a company can't easily pay it off, either by raising capital or with its own cash flow. Part and parcel of capitalism is the process of 'creative destruction' where failed businesses are mercilessly liquidated by their bankers. However, a more usual (but still expensive) situation is where a company must dilute shareholders at a cheap share price simply to get debt under control. Of course, debt can be an important tool in businesses, particularly capital heavy businesses. The first thing to do when considering how much debt a business uses is to look at its cash and debt together.

What Is Expro Group Holdings's Net Debt?
The image below, which you can click on for greater detail, shows that at June 2024 Expro Group Holdings had debt of US$121.1m, up from none in one year. But it also has US$133.5m in cash to offset that, meaning it has US$12.4m net cash.
How Strong Is Expro Group Holdings' Balance Sheet?
The latest balance sheet data shows that Expro Group Holdings had liabilities of US$499.9m due within a year, and liabilities of US$357.5m falling due after that. On the other hand, it had cash of US$133.5m and US$564.0m worth of receivables due within a year. So it has liabilities totalling US$159.9m more than its cash and near-term receivables, combined.
Given Expro Group Holdings has a market capitalization of US$2.07b, it's hard to believe these liabilities pose much threat. However, we do think it is worth keeping an eye on its balance sheet strength, as it may change over time. Despite its noteworthy liabilities, Expro Group Holdings boasts net cash, so it's fair to say it does not have a heavy debt load!
Another good sign is that Expro Group Holdings has been able to increase its EBIT by 21% in twelve months, making it easier to pay down debt. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. But ultimately the future profitability of the business will decide if Expro Group Holdings can strengthen its balance sheet over time. So if you want to see what the professionals think, you might find this free report on analyst profit forecasts to be interesting.
But our final consideration is also important, because a company cannot pay debt with paper profits; it needs cold hard cash. Expro Group Holdings may have net cash on the balance sheet, but it is still interesting to look at how well the business converts its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) to free cash flow, because that will influence both its need for, and its capacity to manage debt. In the last two years, Expro Group Holdings created free cash flow amounting to 6.6% of its EBIT, an uninspiring performance. That limp level of cash conversion undermines its ability to manage and pay down debt.
Summing Up
While it is always sensible to look at a company's total liabilities, it is very reassuring that Expro Group Holdings has US$12.4m in net cash. And we liked the look of last year's 21% year-on-year EBIT growth. So we don't have any problem with Expro Group Holdings's use of debt. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. But ultimately, every company can contain risks that exist outside of the balance sheet.
