Investors Shouldn't Overlook Teekay Tankers' (NYSE:TNK) Impressive Returns On Capital
If you're looking for a multi-bagger, there's a few things to keep an eye out for. Firstly, we'll want to see a proven return on capital employed (ROCE) that is increasing, and secondly, an expanding base of capital employed. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. So when we looked at the ROCE trend of Teekay Tankers (NYSE:TNK) we really liked what we saw.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Teekay Tankers:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.35 = US$580m ÷ (US$1.8b - US$130m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2023).
So, Teekay Tankers has an ROCE of 35%. In absolute terms that's a great return and it's even better than the Oil and Gas industry average of 15%.

What The Trend Of ROCE Can Tell Us
Teekay Tankers has broken into the black (profitability) and we're sure it's a sight for sore eyes. The company was generating losses five years ago, but has managed to turn it around and as we saw earlier is now earning 35%, which is always encouraging. While returns have increased, the amount of capital employed by Teekay Tankers has remained flat over the period. With no noticeable increase in capital employed, it's worth knowing what the company plans on doing going forward in regards to reinvesting and growing the business. So if you're looking for high growth, you'll want to see a business's capital employed also increasing.
What We Can Learn From Teekay Tankers' ROCE
In summary, we're delighted to see that Teekay Tankers has been able to increase efficiencies and earn higher rates of return on the same amount of capital. And with the stock having performed exceptionally well over the last five years, these patterns are being accounted for by investors. So given the stock has proven it has promising trends, it's worth researching the company further to see if these trends are likely to persist.
