DT Midstream's (NYSE:DTM) Shareholders Will Receive A Bigger Dividend Than Last Year

DT Midstream, Inc. (NYSE:DTM) has announced that it will be increasing its periodic dividend on the 15th of April to $0.82, which will be 12% higher than last year's comparable payment amount of $0.735. Although the dividend is now higher, the yield is only 3.1%, which is below the industry average.

DT Midstream's Payment Could Potentially Have Solid Earnings Coverage

The dividend yield is a little bit low, but sustainability of the payments is also an important part of evaluating an income stock. Prior to this announcement, DT Midstream's dividend made up quite a large proportion of earnings but only 72% of free cash flows. This leaves plenty of cash for reinvestment into the business.

Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 47.5% over the next year. Under the assumption that the dividend will continue along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 72% which would be quite comfortable going to take the dividend forward.

DT Midstream Is Still Building Its Track Record

The dividend hasn't seen any major cuts in the past, but the company has only been paying a dividend for 4 years, which isn't that long in the grand scheme of things. The dividend has gone from an annual total of $2.40 in 2021 to the most recent total annual payment of $2.94. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 5.2% over that duration. DT Midstream has been growing its dividend at a decent rate, and the payments have been stable. However, the payment history is very short, so there is no evidence yet that the dividend can be sustained over a full economic cycle.

DT Midstream's Dividend Might Lack Growth

Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. DT Midstream has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 11% per annum. The payout ratio is very much on the higher end, which could mean that the growth rate will slow down in the future, and that could flow through to the dividend as well.

In Summary

Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think DT Midstream will make a great income stock. In the past, the payments have been unstable, but over the short term the dividend could be reliable, with the company generating enough cash to cover it. We would probably look elsewhere for an income investment.

Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach.
