Antero Resources Insiders Sell US$3.7m Of Stock, Possibly Signalling Caution
In the last year, many Antero Resources Corporation (NYSE:AR) insiders sold a substantial stake in the company which may have sparked shareholders' attention. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more beneficial than knowing whether they are selling, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.
While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.
Antero Resources Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Chief Compliance Officer, Yvette Schultz, sold US$1.3m worth of shares at a price of US$25.24 per share. That means that an insider was selling shares at slightly below the current price (US$35.95). As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. It is worth noting that this sale was only 45% of Yvette Schultz's holding.

Antero Resources Insiders Are Selling The Stock
The last quarter saw substantial insider selling of Antero Resources shares. In total, insiders sold US$1.5m worth of shares in that time, and we didn't record any purchases whatsoever. In light of this it's hard to argue that all the insiders think that the shares are a bargain.
Insider Ownership
Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. It's great to see that Antero Resources insiders own 5.2% of the company, worth about US$584m. This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
So What Do The Antero Resources Insider Transactions Indicate?
Insiders sold Antero Resources shares recently, but they didn't buy any. And there weren't any purchases to give us comfort, over the last year. But since Antero Resources is profitable and growing, we're not too worried by this. The company boasts high insider ownership, but we're a little hesitant, given the history of share sales. While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision.
