Berry (NASDAQ:BRY shareholders incur further losses as stock declines 14% this week, taking three-year losses to 51%

Investing in stocks inevitably means buying into some companies that perform poorly. But the last three years have been particularly tough on longer term Berry Corporation (NASDAQ:BRY) shareholders. Regrettably, they have had to cope with a 66% drop in the share price over that period. And over the last year the share price fell 48%, so we doubt many shareholders are delighted. Even worse, it's down 17% in about a month, which isn't fun at all.

Since Berry has shed US$44m from its value in the past 7 days, let's see if the longer term decline has been driven by the business' economics.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During five years of share price growth, Berry moved from a loss to profitability. We would usually expect to see the share price rise as a result. So it's worth looking at other metrics to try to understand the share price move.

Revenue is actually up 4.0% over the three years, so the share price drop doesn't seem to hinge on revenue, either. This analysis is just perfunctory, but it might be worth researching Berry more closely, as sometimes stocks fall unfairly. This could present an opportunity.

What About Dividends?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for Berry the TSR over the last 3 years was -51%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

A Different Perspective

Investors in Berry had a tough year, with a total loss of 43% (including dividends), against a market gain of about 15%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 7% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Berry better, we need to consider many other factors. To that end, you should learn about the 3 warning signs we've spotted with Berry (including 1 which makes us a bit uncomfortable) .
