WEX's (NYSE:WEX) investors will be pleased with their 15% return over the last year
We believe investing is smart because history shows that stock markets go higher in the long term. But not every stock you buy will perform as well as the overall market. Unfortunately for shareholders, while the WEX Inc. (NYSE:WEX) share price is up 15% in the last year, that falls short of the market return. However, the longer term returns haven't been so impressive, with the stock up just 8.5% in the last three years.
So let's investigate and see if the longer term performance of the company has been in line with the underlying business' progress.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
During the last year WEX grew its earnings per share (EPS) by 22%. It's fair to say that the share price gain of 15% did not keep pace with the EPS growth. Therefore, it seems the market isn't as excited about WEX as it was before. This could be an opportunity.
The image below shows how EPS has tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail).
We consider it positive that insiders have made significant purchases in the last year. Having said that, most people consider earnings and revenue growth trends to be a more meaningful guide to the business. A Different Perspective
WEX shareholders gained a total return of 15% during the year. But that was short of the market average. The silver lining is that the gain was actually better than the average annual return of 0.7% per year over five year. It is possible that returns will improve along with the business fundamentals. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
