Apollo Global Management (NYSE:APO) Could Be A Buy For Its Upcoming Dividend
Regular readers will know that we love our dividends at Simply Wall St, which is why it's exciting to see Apollo Global Management, Inc. (NYSE:APO) is about to trade ex-dividend in the next four days. Typically, the ex-dividend date is one business day before the record date which is the date on which a company determines the shareholders eligible to receive a dividend. The ex-dividend date is of consequence because whenever a stock is bought or sold, the trade takes at least two business day to settle. Therefore, if you purchase Apollo Global Management's shares on or after the 18th of February, you won't be eligible to receive the dividend, when it is paid on the 28th of February.
The company's next dividend payment will be US$0.4625 per share, on the back of last year when the company paid a total of US$1.85 to shareholders. Calculating the last year's worth of payments shows that Apollo Global Management has a trailing yield of 1.2% on the current share price of US$157.44. We love seeing companies pay a dividend, but it's also important to be sure that laying the golden eggs isn't going to kill our golden goose! So we need to investigate whether Apollo Global Management can afford its dividend, and if the dividend could grow.

Dividends are typically paid out of company income, so if a company pays out more than it earned, its dividend is usually at a higher risk of being cut. Apollo Global Management has a low and conservative payout ratio of just 24% of its income after tax.
When a company paid out less in dividends than it earned in profit, this generally suggests its dividend is affordable. The lower the % of its profit that it pays out, the greater the margin of safety for the dividend if the business enters a downturn.

Have Earnings And Dividends Been Growing?
Stocks in companies that generate sustainable earnings growth often make the best dividend prospects, as it is easier to lift the dividend when earnings are rising. If earnings decline and the company is forced to cut its dividend, investors could watch the value of their investment go up in smoke. Fortunately for readers, Apollo Global Management's earnings per share have been growing at 16% a year for the past five years.
The main way most investors will assess a company's dividend prospects is by checking the historical rate of dividend growth. Apollo Global Management's dividend payments per share have declined at 8.3% per year on average over the past 10 years, which is uninspiring. Apollo Global Management is a rare case where dividends have been decreasing at the same time as earnings per share have been improving. It's unusual to see, and could point to unstable conditions in the core business, or more rarely an intensified focus on reinvesting profits.
To Sum It Up
Is Apollo Global Management worth buying for its dividend? When companies are growing rapidly and retaining a majority of the profits within the business, it's usually a sign that reinvesting earnings creates more value than paying dividends to shareholders. This strategy can add significant value to shareholders over the long term - as long as it's done without issuing too many new shares. In summary, Apollo Global Management appears to have some promise as a dividend stock, and we'd suggest taking a closer look at it.
