Unfortunately, investing is risky - companies can and do go bankrupt. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. For example, the Six Flags Entertainment Corporation (NYSE:SIX) share price has soared 111% return in just a single year. Meanwhile the share price is 3.1% higher than it was a week ago. On the other hand, longer term shareholders have had a tougher run, with the stock falling 37% in three years.

After a strong gain in the past week, it's worth seeing if longer term returns have been driven by improving fundamentals.

Given that Six Flags Entertainment didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.

In the last year Six Flags Entertainment saw its revenue shrink by 21%. So we would not have expected the share price to rise 111%. This is a good example of how buyers can push up prices even before the fundamental metrics show much growth. It's quite likely the revenue fall was already priced in, anyway.

It's probably worth noting we've seen significant insider buying in the last quarter, which we consider a positive. That said, we think earnings and revenue growth trends are even more important factors to consider. So it makes a lot of sense to check out what analysts think Six Flags Entertainment will earn in the future (free profit forecasts).

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that Six Flags Entertainment shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 111% over one year. That certainly beats the loss of about 0.3% per year over the last half decade. We generally put more weight on the long term performance over the short term, but the recent improvement could hint at a (positive) inflection point within the business. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. To that end, you should be aware of the 2 warning signs we've spotted with Six Flags Entertainment .
