Rush Street Interactive, Inc.'s (NYSE:RSI) Stock Retreats 29% But Revenues Haven't Escaped The Attention Of Investors

Rush Street Interactive, Inc. (NYSE:RSI) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 29% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. Looking at the bigger picture, even after this poor month the stock is up 68% in the last year.

Even after such a large drop in price, it's still not a stretch to say that Rush Street Interactive's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.1x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Hospitality industry in the United States, where the median P/S ratio is around 1.6x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

How Rush Street Interactive Has Been Performing

Rush Street Interactive certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing revenue more than most other companies. It might be that many expect the strong revenue performance to wane, which has kept the P/S ratio from rising. If the company manages to stay the course, then investors should be rewarded with a share price that matches its revenue figures.

How Is Rush Street Interactive's Revenue Growth Trending?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Rush Street Interactive would need to produce growth that's similar to the industry.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 34% last year. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 89% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 13% per year during the coming three years according to the nine analysts following the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 13% growth each year, the company is positioned for a comparable revenue result.

In light of this, it's understandable that Rush Street Interactive's P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies. Apparently shareholders are comfortable to simply hold on while the company is keeping a low profile.

The Final Word

Following Rush Street Interactive's share price tumble, its P/S is just clinging on to the industry median P/S. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

A Rush Street Interactive's P/S seems about right to us given the knowledge that analysts are forecasting a revenue outlook that is similar to the Hospitality industry. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement or deterioration in revenue isn't great enough to push P/S in a higher or lower direction. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to support the share price at these levels.
