Possible Bearish Signals With Planet Fitness Insiders Disposing Stock
The fact that multiple Planet Fitness, Inc. (NYSE:PLNT) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.
While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.
Planet Fitness Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
The CEO & Director, Colleen Keating, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$2.4m worth of shares at a price of US$103 each. That means that an insider was selling shares at around the current price of US$101. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. In this case, the big sale took place at around the current price, so it's not too bad (but it's still not a positive).
In the last year Planet Fitness insiders didn't buy any company stock. The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year. If you want to know exactly who sold, for how much, and when, simply click on the graph below!

Does Planet Fitness Boast High Insider Ownership?
Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. Planet Fitness insiders own about US$30m worth of shares. That equates to 0.4% of the company. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
What Might The Insider Transactions At Planet Fitness Tell Us?
It doesn't really mean much that no insider has traded Planet Fitness shares in the last quarter. Still, the insider transactions at Planet Fitness in the last 12 months are not very heartening.
