Genius Sports Limited (NYSE:GENI) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 26% gain in the last month alone. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 29%.

Since its price has surged higher, when almost half of the companies in the United States' Hospitality industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 1.3x, you may consider Genius Sports as a stock not worth researching with its 3.7x P/S ratio. However, the P/S might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Genius Sports Has Been Performing

With revenue growth that's inferior to most other companies of late, Genius Sports has been relatively sluggish. It might be that many expect the uninspiring revenue performance to recover significantly, which has kept the P/S ratio from collapsing. If not, then existing shareholders may be very nervous about the viability of the share price.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The High P/S Ratio?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far outperform the industry for P/S ratios like Genius Sports' to be considered reasonable.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 22% gain to the company's top line. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow revenue by 180% in total over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the eleven analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 19% per annum over the next three years. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 12% per annum growth forecast for the broader industry.

In light of this, it's understandable that Genius Sports' P/S sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

The Final Word

Shares in Genius Sports have seen a strong upwards swing lately, which has really helped boost its P/S figure. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

Our look into Genius Sports shows that its P/S ratio remains high on the merit of its strong future revenues. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/S as they are quite confident future revenues aren't under threat.
