What trends should we look for it we want to identify stocks that can multiply in value over the long term? Firstly, we'll want to see a proven return on capital employed (ROCE) that is increasing, and secondly, an expanding base of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. So when we looked at Everi Holdings (NYSE:EVRI) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.

Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)

For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. The formula for this calculation on Everi Holdings is:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.17 = US$212m ÷ (US$1.7b - US$469m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2023).

Therefore, Everi Holdings has an ROCE of 17%. In absolute terms, that's a satisfactory return, but compared to the Hospitality industry average of 9.4% it's much better.

How Are Returns Trending?

Everi Holdings is showing promise given that its ROCE is trending up and to the right. The figures show that over the last five years, ROCE has grown 116% whilst employing roughly the same amount of capital. So our take on this is that the business has increased efficiencies to generate these higher returns, all the while not needing to make any additional investments. The company is doing well in that sense, and it's worth investigating what the management team has planned for long term growth prospects.

The Bottom Line On Everi Holdings' ROCE

In summary, we're delighted to see that Everi Holdings has been able to increase efficiencies and earn higher rates of return on the same amount of capital. And investors seem to expect more of this going forward, since the stock has rewarded shareholders with a 78% return over the last five years. In light of that, we think it's worth looking further into this stock because if Everi Holdings can keep these trends up, it could have a bright future ahead.
