Brinker International, Inc.'s (NYSE:EAT) Shares Bounce 32% But Its Business Still Trails The Market

Brinker International, Inc. (NYSE:EAT) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 32% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Taking a wider view, although not as strong as the last month, the full year gain of 15% is also fairly reasonable.

Even after such a large jump in price, Brinker International may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 15.2x, since almost half of all companies in the United States have P/E ratios greater than 19x and even P/E's higher than 34x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

With earnings growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Brinker International has been doing relatively well. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings performance might be less impressive moving forward. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Does Growth Match The Low P/E?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as Brinker International's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 138% last year. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 497% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 8.3% each year as estimated by the analysts watching the company. With the market predicted to deliver 11% growth per annum, the company is positioned for a weaker earnings result.

In light of this, it's understandable that Brinker International's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

The Bottom Line On Brinker International's P/E

Despite Brinker International's shares building up a head of steam, its P/E still lags most other companies. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

We've established that Brinker International maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider market, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
