Insiders At Choice Hotels International Sold US$2.3m In Stock, Alluding To Potential Weakness
In the last year, many Choice Hotels International, Inc. (NYSE:CHH) insiders sold a substantial stake in the company which may have sparked shareholders' attention. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.
Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.
Choice Hotels International Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Chief Human Resources Officer, Patrick Cimerola, sold US$731k worth of shares at a price of US$135 per share. That means that an insider was selling shares at around the current price of US$128. We generally don't like to see insider selling, but the lower the sale price, the more it concerns us. Given that the sale took place at around current prices, it makes us a little cautious but is hardly a major concern.

Overall this makes us a bit cautious, but it's not the be all and end all.
Does Choice Hotels International Boast High Insider Ownership?
I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. It's great to see that Choice Hotels International insiders own 22% of the company, worth about US$1.3b. This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
So What Do The Choice Hotels International Insider Transactions Indicate?
An insider sold stock recently, but they haven't been buying. Looking to the last twelve months, our data doesn't show any insider buying.
