Returns On Capital Are Showing Encouraging Signs At Boyd Gaming (NYSE:BYD)

Published
NYSE:BYD

Did you know there are some financial metrics that can provide clues of a potential multi-bagger? Amongst other things, we'll want to see two things; firstly, a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an expansion in the company's amount of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. So when we looked at Boyd Gaming (NYSE:BYD) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.

Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?

If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Boyd Gaming:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.17 = US$947m ÷ (US$6.3b - US$611m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2024).

Thus, Boyd Gaming has an ROCE of 17%. On its own, that's a standard return, however it's much better than the 8.7% generated by the Hospitality industry.

What Does the ROCE Trend For Boyd Gaming Tell Us?

Boyd Gaming has not disappointed with their ROCE growth. More specifically, while the company has kept capital employed relatively flat over the last five years, the ROCE has climbed 125% in that same time. So our take on this is that the business has increased efficiencies to generate these higher returns, all the while not needing to make any additional investments. It's worth looking deeper into this though because while it's great that the business is more efficient, it might also mean that going forward the areas to invest internally for the organic growth are lacking.

Our Take On Boyd Gaming's ROCE

As discussed above, Boyd Gaming appears to be getting more proficient at generating returns since capital employed has remained flat but earnings (before interest and tax) are up. And a remarkable 150% total return over the last five years tells us that investors are expecting more good things to come in the future. Therefore, we think it would be worth your time to check if these trends are going to continue.
