Here's Why We Think ONE Group Hospitality (NASDAQ:STKS) Is Well Worth Watching

Some have more dollars than sense, they say, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can easily find investors. But as Warren Buffett has mused, 'If you've been playing poker for half an hour and you still don't know who the patsy is, you're the patsy.' When they buy such story stocks, investors are all too often the patsy.

If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in ONE Group Hospitality (NASDAQ:STKS). While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

How Fast Is ONE Group Hospitality Growing?

If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price will eventually follow. That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. We can see that in the last three years ONE Group Hospitality grew its EPS by 13% per year. That's a good rate of growth, if it can be sustained.

I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). ONE Group Hospitality shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 0.01% to 8.1%, and revenue is growing. That's great to see, on both counts.

Are ONE Group Hospitality Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

It makes me feel more secure owning shares in a company if insiders also own shares, thusly more closely aligning our interests. So it is good to see that ONE Group Hospitality insiders have a significant amount of capital invested in the stock. With a whopping US$88m worth of shares as a group, insiders have plenty riding on the company's success. At 22% of the company, the co-investment by insiders gives me confidence that management will make long-term focussed decisions.

It means a lot to see insiders invested in the business, but I find myself wondering if remuneration policies are shareholder friendly. A brief analysis of the CEO compensation suggests they are. I discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like ONE Group Hospitality with market caps between US$200m and US$800m is about US$1.7m.

ONE Group Hospitality offered total compensation worth US$1.1m to its CEO in the year to . That seems pretty reasonable, especially given its below the median for similar sized companies. CEO compensation is hardly the most important aspect of a company to consider, but when its reasonable that does give me a little more confidence that leadership are looking out for shareholder interests. It can also be a sign of good governance, more generally.

Is ONE Group Hospitality Worth Keeping An Eye On?

As I already mentioned, ONE Group Hospitality is a growing business, which is what I like to see. Earnings growth might be the main game for ONE Group Hospitality, but the fun does not stop there. With a meaningful level of insider ownership, and reasonable CEO pay, a reasonable mind might conclude that this is one stock worth watching.
