Do Frontdoor's (NASDAQ:FTDR) Earnings Warrant Your Attention?

Investors are often guided by the idea of discovering 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without any revenue, let alone profit. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else investors will move on and the company will wither away.

Despite being in the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, many investors still adopt a more traditional strategy; buying shares in profitable companies like Frontdoor (NASDAQ:FTDR). While profit isn't the sole metric that should be considered when investing, it's worth recognising businesses that can consistently produce it.

Frontdoor's Earnings Per Share Are Growing

Generally, companies experiencing growth in earnings per share (EPS) should see similar trends in share price. That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. Over the last three years, Frontdoor has grown EPS by 12% per year. That growth rate is fairly good, assuming the company can keep it up.

It's often helpful to take a look at earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. Frontdoor shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 9.0% to 15%, and revenue is growing. That's great to see, on both counts.

Are Frontdoor Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

It's a good habit to check into a company's remuneration policies to ensure that the CEO and management team aren't putting their own interests before that of the shareholder with excessive salary packages. Our analysis has discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like Frontdoor with market caps between US$2.0b and US$6.4b is about US$6.8m.

Frontdoor's CEO took home a total compensation package worth US$5.2m in the year leading up to December 2022. That comes in below the average for similar sized companies and seems pretty reasonable. CEO compensation is hardly the most important aspect of a company to consider, but when it's reasonable, that gives a little more confidence that leadership are looking out for shareholder interests. Generally, arguments can be made that reasonable pay levels attest to good decision-making.

Should You Add Frontdoor To Your Watchlist?

One important encouraging feature of Frontdoor is that it is growing profits. Not only that, but the CEO is paid quite reasonably, which should prompt investors to feel more trusting of the board of directors. So all in all Frontdoor is worthy at least considering for your watchlist. However, before you get too excited we've discovered 1 warning sign for Frontdoor that you should be aware of.
