It's common for many investors, especially those who are inexperienced, to buy shares in companies with a good story even if these companies are loss-making. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else investors will move on and the company will wither away.

So if this idea of high risk and high reward doesn't suit, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Meritage Homes (NYSE:MTH). Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business.

How Fast Is Meritage Homes Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

In the last three years Meritage Homes' earnings per share took off; so much so that it's a bit disingenuous to use these figures to try and deduce long term estimates. So it would be better to isolate the growth rate over the last year for our analysis. Meritage Homes' EPS skyrocketed from US$19.61 to US$27.13, in just one year; a result that's bound to bring a smile to shareholders. That's a impressive gain of 38%.

It's often helpful to take a look at earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. While we note Meritage Homes achieved similar EBIT margins to last year, revenue grew by a solid 22% to US$6.3b. That's progress.

Are Meritage Homes Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

It should give investors a sense of security owning shares in a company if insiders also own shares, creating a close alignment their interests. So it is good to see that Meritage Homes insiders have a significant amount of capital invested in the stock. Given insiders own a significant chunk of shares, currently valued at US$74m, they have plenty of motivation to push the business to succeed. This would indicate that the goals of shareholders and management are one and the same.

Is Meritage Homes Worth Keeping An Eye On?

You can't deny that Meritage Homes has grown its earnings per share at a very impressive rate. That's attractive. This EPS growth rate is something the company should be proud of, and so it's no surprise that insiders are holding on to a considerable chunk of shares. Fast growth and confident insiders should be enough to warrant further research, so it would seem that it's a good stock to follow. Still, you should learn about the 2 warning signs we've spotted with Meritage Homes (including 1 which makes us a bit uncomfortable).
