Garmin Ltd.'s (NYSE:GRMN) Shareholders Might Be Looking For Exit

With a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 26.9x Garmin Ltd. (NYSE:GRMN) may be sending bearish signals at the moment, given that almost half of all companies in the United States have P/E ratios under 18x and even P/E's lower than 11x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

With earnings growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Garmin has been doing relatively well. The P/E is probably high because investors think this strong earnings performance will continue. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

How Is Garmin's Growth Trending?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Garmin would need to produce impressive growth in excess of the market.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 46% last year. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow EPS by 34% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 5.0% per year as estimated by the eight analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 11% each year growth forecast for the broader market.

With this information, we find it concerning that Garmin is trading at a P/E higher than the market. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as this level of earnings growth is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.

What We Can Learn From Garmin's P/E?

It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

Our examination of Garmin's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior earnings outlook isn't impacting its high P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. Right now we are increasingly uncomfortable with the high P/E as the predicted future earnings aren't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. Unless these conditions improve markedly, it's very challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
