The three-year decline in earnings for Beazer Homes USA NYSE:BZH) isn't encouraging, but shareholders are still up 52% over that period
Beazer Homes USA, Inc. (NYSE:BZH) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 23% in the last quarter. In contrast the stock is up over the last three years. However, it's unlikely many shareholders are elated with the share price gain of 52% over that time, given the rising market.
Although Beazer Homes USA has shed US$54m from its market cap this week, let's take a look at its longer term fundamental trends and see if they've driven returns.
To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
Over the last three years, Beazer Homes USA failed to grow earnings per share, which fell 40% (annualized).
So we doubt that the market is looking to EPS for its main judge of the company's value. Therefore, we think it's worth considering other metrics as well.
Do you think that shareholders are buying for the 1.4% per annum revenue growth trend? We don't. While we don't have an obvious theory to explain the share price rise, a closer look at the data might be enlightening.

We consider it positive that insiders have made significant purchases in the last year. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. You can see what analysts are predicting for Beazer Homes USA in this interactive graph of future profit estimates.
A Different Perspective
Beazer Homes USA shareholders are down 39% for the year, but the market itself is up 13%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 6% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Take risks, for example - Beazer Homes USA has 3 warning signs (and 1 which is a bit unpleasant) we think you should know about.
