Possible Bearish Signals With Steven Madden Insiders Disposing Stock

Quite a few Steven Madden, Ltd. (NASDAQ:SHOO) insiders sold their shares over the past year, which may be a cause for concern. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more beneficial than knowing whether they are selling, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Steven Madden

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Chief Merchandising Officer, Karla Frieders, for US$449k worth of shares, at about US$44.91 per share. We generally don't like to see insider selling, but the lower the sale price, the more it concerns us. The silver lining is that this sell-down took place above the latest price (US$25.03). So it is hard to draw any strong conclusion from it.

In the last year Steven Madden insiders didn't buy any company stock. The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year. If you click on the chart, you can see all the individual transactions, including the share price, individual, and the date!

Insiders At Steven Madden Have Sold Stock Recently

We have seen a bit of insider selling at Steven Madden, over the last three months. Independent Director Peter Davis only netted US$25k selling shares, in that period. It's not great to see insider selling, nor the lack of recent buyers. But the amount sold isn't enough for us to put any weight on it.

Insider Ownership

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. It appears that Steven Madden insiders own 2.2% of the company, worth about US$40m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Steven Madden Insiders?

Our data shows a little more insider selling, but no insider buying, in the last three months. But the sales were small, so we're not concerned. Recent insider selling makes us a little nervous, in light of the broader picture of Steven Madden insider transactions. But we do like the fact that insiders own a fair chunk of the company. While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision. In terms of investment risks, we've identified 1 warning sign with Steven Madden and understanding this should be part of your investment process.
