The Lovesac Company's (NASDAQ:LOVE) Share Price Is Still Matching Investor Opinion Despite 26% Slump
To the annoyance of some shareholders, The Lovesac Company (NASDAQ:LOVE) shares are down a considerable 26% in the last month, which continues a horrid run for the company. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 25% in that time.
In spite of the heavy fall in price, Lovesac may still be sending very bearish signals at the moment with a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 35.5x, since almost half of all companies in the United States have P/E ratios under 17x and even P/E's lower than 10x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.
Lovesac could be doing better as its earnings have been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive earnings growth. It might be that many expect the dour earnings performance to recover substantially, which has kept the P/E from collapsing. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/E?
In order to justify its P/E ratio, Lovesac would need to produce outstanding growth well in excess of the market.
Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 63%. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk EPS by 80% in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 53% per annum as estimated by the six analysts watching the company. With the market only predicted to deliver 11% per year, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.
With this information, we can see why Lovesac is trading at such a high P/E compared to the market. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.
What We Can Learn From Lovesac's P/E?
Even after such a strong price drop, Lovesac's P/E still exceeds the rest of the market significantly. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
We've established that Lovesac maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
It is also worth noting that we have found 3 warning signs for Lovesac that you need to take into consideration.
