Return Trends At Escalade (NASDAQ:ESCA) Aren't Appealing

If we want to find a stock that could multiply over the long term, what are the underlying trends we should look for? Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. So, when we ran our eye over Escalade's (NASDAQ:ESCA) trend of ROCE, we liked what we saw.

Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)

If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on Escalade is:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.10 = US$28m ÷ (US$320m - US$50m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to October 2022).

So, Escalade has an ROCE of 10%. In isolation, that's a pretty standard return but against the Leisure industry average of 21%, it's not as good.

What Does the ROCE Trend For Escalade Tell Us?

While the current returns on capital are decent, they haven't changed much. Over the past five years, ROCE has remained relatively flat at around 10% and the business has deployed 99% more capital into its operations. Since 10% is a moderate ROCE though, it's good to see a business can continue to reinvest at these decent rates of return. Stable returns in this ballpark can be unexciting, but if they can be maintained over the long run, they often provide nice rewards to shareholders.

The Bottom Line On Escalade's ROCE

In the end, Escalade has proven its ability to adequately reinvest capital at good rates of return. And given the stock has only risen 7.0% over the last five years, we'd suspect the market is beginning to recognize these trends. So because of the trends we're seeing, we'd recommend looking further into this stock to see if it has the makings of a multi-bagger.

On a final note, we found 2 warning signs for Escalade (1 is a bit concerning) you should be aware of.
