Strong week for BGSF (NYSE:BGSF) shareholders doesn't alleviate pain of three-year loss
It is doubtless a positive to see that the BGSF, Inc. (NYSE:BGSF) share price has gained some 49% in the last three months. But over the last three years we've seen a quite serious decline. Regrettably, the share price slid 57% in that period. So it's good to see it climbing back up. After all, could be that the fall was overdone.
On a more encouraging note the company has added US$16m to its market cap in just the last 7 days, so let's see if we can determine what's driven the three-year loss for shareholders.
To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
Over the three years that the share price declined, BGSF's earnings per share (EPS) dropped significantly, falling to a loss. Due to the loss, it's not easy to use EPS as a reliable guide to the business. But it's safe to say we'd generally expect the share price to be lower as a result!
The company's earnings per share (over time) is depicted in the image below (click to see the exact numbers).

What About The Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
Investors should note that there's a difference between BGSF's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price change, which we've covered above. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. BGSF's TSR of was a loss of 53% for the 3 years. That wasn't as bad as its share price return, because it has paid dividends.
A Different Perspective
While the broader market gained around 11% in the last year, BGSF shareholders lost 26%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 6% per year over five years. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Even so, be aware that BGSF is showing 4 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 2 of those are potentially serious...
