Conduent (NASDAQ:CNDT) Is Looking To Continue Growing Its Returns On Capital
What are the early trends we should look for to identify a stock that could multiply in value over the long term? One common approach is to try and find a company with returns on capital employed (ROCE) that are increasing, in conjunction with a growing amount of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. So when we looked at Conduent (NASDAQ:CNDT) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. To calculate this metric for Conduent, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.047 = US$125m ÷ (US$3.5b - US$842m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2023).
So, Conduent has an ROCE of 4.7%. In absolute terms, that's a low return and it also under-performs the Professional Services industry average of 12%.

What Does the ROCE Trend For Conduent Tell Us?
Even though ROCE is still low in absolute terms, it's good to see it's heading in the right direction. The figures show that over the last five years, returns on capital have grown by 44%. That's not bad because this tells for every dollar invested (capital employed), the company is increasing the amount earned from that dollar. Interestingly, the business may be becoming more efficient because it's applying 57% less capital than it was five years ago. A business that's shrinking its asset base like this isn't usually typical of a soon to be multi-bagger company.
The Bottom Line On Conduent's ROCE
In the end, Conduent has proven it's capital allocation skills are good with those higher returns from less amount of capital. And since the stock has dived 83% over the last five years, there may be other factors affecting the company's prospects. Still, it's worth doing some further research to see if the trends will continue into the future.
