The last three months have been tough on Orion Group Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:ORN) shareholders, who have seen the share price decline a rather worrying 34%. In contrast, the return over three years has been impressive. In fact, the share price is up a full 147% compared to three years ago. To some, the recent share price pullback wouldn't be surprising after such a good run. If the business can perform well for years to come, then the recent drop could be an opportunity.

Although Orion Group Holdings has shed US$56m from its market cap this week, let's take a look at its longer term fundamental trends and see if they've driven returns.

Orion Group Holdings isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.

Over the last three years Orion Group Holdings has grown its revenue at 6.4% annually. Considering the company is losing money, we think that rate of revenue growth is uninspiring. In comparison, the share price rise of 35% per year over the last three years is pretty impressive. We'd need to take a closer look at the revenue and profit trends to see whether the improvements might justify that sort of increase. It may be that the market is pretty optimistic about Orion Group Holdings if you look to the bottom line.

A Different Perspective

Orion Group Holdings shareholders are down 20% for the year, but the market itself is up 16%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 16% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
