Flowserve Insiders Sell US$5.8m Of Stock, Possibly Signalling Caution
Many Flowserve Corporation (NYSE:FLS) insiders ditched their stock over the past year, which may be of interest to the company's shareholders. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more beneficial than knowing whether they are selling, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.
While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Flowserve Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the President, Robert Rowe, sold US$5.0m worth of shares at a price of US$49.98 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of US$58.26. We generally consider it a negative if insiders have been selling, especially if they did so below the current price, because it implies that they considered a lower price to be reasonable. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. This single sale was just 22% of Robert Rowe's stake.

Insider Ownership
Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. Insiders own 0.4% of Flowserve shares, worth about US$34m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
