The total return for ESCO Technologies (NYSE:ESE) investors has risen faster than earnings growth over the last three years
By buying an index fund, you can roughly match the market return with ease. But if you pick the right individual stocks, you could make more than that. For example, ESCO Technologies Inc. (NYSE:ESE) shareholders have seen the share price rise 64% over three years, well in excess of the market return (22%, not including dividends). However, more recent returns haven't been as impressive as that, with the stock returning just 35% in the last year, including dividends.
Since the long term performance has been good but there's been a recent pullback of 3.3%, let's check if the fundamentals match the share price.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
During three years of share price growth, ESCO Technologies achieved compound earnings per share growth of 17% per year. This EPS growth is remarkably close to the 18% average annual increase in the share price. This observation indicates that the market's attitude to the business hasn't changed all that much. Au contraire, the share price change has arguably mimicked the EPS growth.

A Different Perspective
ESCO Technologies shareholders have received returns of 35% over twelve months (even including dividends), which isn't far from the general market return. That gain looks pretty satisfying, and it is even better than the five-year TSR of 11% per year. Even if the share price growth slows down from here, there's a good chance that this is business worth watching in the long term. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
