Looking at Crane Company's (NYSE:CR ) insider transactions over the last year, we can see that insiders were net sellers. That is, there were more number of shares sold by insiders than there were purchased.
While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Crane Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Executive VP, Anthony D'Iorio, for US$617k worth of shares, at about US$124 per share. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of US$176, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. This single sale was just 16% of Anthony D'Iorio's stake. Anthony D'Iorio was the only individual insider to sell shares in the last twelve months.

Does Crane Boast High Insider Ownership?
Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Insiders own 0.9% of Crane shares, worth about US$81m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
What Might The Insider Transactions At Crane Tell Us?
The fact that there have been no Crane insider transactions recently certainly doesn't bother us. We don't take much encouragement from the transactions by Crane insiders. The modest level of insider ownership is, at least, some comfort. If you are like me, you may want to think about whether this company will grow or shrink.
